Healthcare Reform pushes to improve the overall value of healthcare by providing increased quality while at the same time reducing cost. When we deliver quality, we meet the customer’s expectations by engaging in work that decreases delays, eliminates hospital acquired conditions, and reduces adverse events which ultimately reduces patient costs and increases satisfaction. The trick is quantifying the value of this work by “setting a business case for quality” through measuring and monitoring clinical and financial outcomes. After consulting with the National Health System in Europe and Kaiser Foundation, Intermountain Healthcare developed an ROI calculator that is meaningful to Operations. This session will provide an overview of the calculator, walk through the ROI analysis of a specific improvement initiative, and demonstrate how the calculator can not only be used retrospectively but also prospectively in an effort to calculate the potential ROI of a proposed investment to improve safety or reduce harm.
