In recent years, supplier quality teams have shifted the outlook on supplier management to a collaborative partnership with an opportunity to develop a supplier’s quality management system and practices. Medtronic implemented a supplier development pilot program with one of their largest contract manufacturers after experiencing an influx in product hold orders and field actions. The program specifically tackled the issue of eliminating defects at the source and working with the supplier to incorporate a First-Time Quality playbook throughout the manufacturing process.

  • Identifying a supplier in need of development opportunities
  • Training and scaling an internal methodology for a supplier
  • Results: reducing product defects at the manufacturing facility
  • Next steps in continuing the pilot program with other suppliers
