Adulteration, the accidental or intentional substitution or dilution of a material with an undisclosed lower-cost ingredient, is a global and industry-wide concern that this session addresses with strategies to detect adulterated botanical raw materials, extracts, and essential oils and defend against this practice. A variety of resources from peer-reviewed publications produced by the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Program, a consortium of nonprofit organizations, research centers, and industry laboratories, include analytical methods to scientific publications that provide regulatory and QC executives tools and tactics to ensure an authentic supply of botanical ingredients. In addition, monitoring reports and additional QC guidelines are freely-accessible to increase trust, improve verification of the supply chain, and overcome the challenges with adulterated botanicals in the marketplace.
